Field Notes

Description:

A parent killdeer gives a broken wing display to try to lure away predators from the nest. In this case, I was the "predator", and it acted like it was injured and made distress sounds to try to lure me away from the nest (1st and 2nd photos). The 3rd photo is the nest. The last time I checked on it before this, there was only one egg. They may lay more, but they may not. When I first approached the nest, the parent actually came closer to me (4th photo), but then it went away from the nest and did the display.

Habitat:

A parking lot in my town; urban
