Field Notes

Description:

The red fox has some shade of yellowish red. There is usually a trace of black in the fur of the middle of the back and the bushy tail, and the feet and outer side of the tips of the ears are black. The throat, underside of the body, and tip of the tail are white. In the winter the coat is thick.

Habitat:

The red fox live in a variety of habits throughout Minnesota, but prefer semi-open country to continuous forest.

Notes:

About 8:00 a.m. I saw a red fox come wandering along the lake shore. He seemed hungry and eyed 2 geese that were walking on the ice and snow. After about five minutes the fox decided to run off into the Tamarac woods by the boat landing. I think the two geese would have ganged up on him.
