Description:

This one probably had a close call with a predator as it's lost its tail recently. There are probably half a dozen different species which all look similar and the websites I've looked at differ with the names and distribution so a lot more research required before I can get a correct ID.

Thanks Daniele, I have updated. I found this page yesterday http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_reptiles_of_Spain and it shows the distribution as North Africa only but clicking on the link does show it in Europe! One reason I don't trust wiki!

Hi Malcolm! My suggestion is based on the usually characteristic pattern for this lizard, and the keeled aspect of the scales. It is found in most of the Iberian peninsula excepted the extreme north. Info from the Collins field guide to Reptiles and Amphibians, last edition.
