downy woodpecker

over the week a large group of tree trimmers came though the neighborhood and destroyed this woodpeckers nest. the babies were huddled up in the hedge calling for mom who wouldn't come. i picked both of them up and but them in a card bored box with hole drilled in the front and duck taped it to the tree. at first i was really concerned because the parent left and didn't come back till the afternoon the next day so i fed them mashed up crickets they ate them since they hadn't gotten any food for 6 or more hours. my guess was that they were about 14 days old and could take food that wasn't pre digested i guessed correctly because they parents came backed to the nest and were feeding the babies exactly the same food i gave them but with more worms. the parents left again and i haven't seen them for a day one baby fell out. if you want to know more look at my new downy woodpecker spotting with a better picture of the baby.
