Field Notes

Description:

Orchid family. White and pink flower with pouch-like petal.

Habitat:

This flower grows in cool and dense forests and swamps. It is quite rare, but is found in secluded places in Minnesota, especially in the northern areas.

Notes:

I spotted this flower along with many others on Hwy 29, near Pine Lake, on the road going to Tamarac NWR. The Showy Lady's Slipper is Minnesota's official state flower and is also known as the "Orchid of the North."
