Field Notes

Description:

Pea Family. This low plant with clover-like leaves and yellow pea-like flowers are found in flat-topped clusters. It flowers from June to September.

Habitat:

This non-native plant grows in dry, sunny, fields and along roadsides.

Notes:

I found Birdsfoot Trefoil along the Pine Lake road. This yellow pea-like flower was introduced from Europe. It was planted for erosion control along newly constructed roads. It can be very aggressive and take over soils very quickly. Its common name refers in part to its seedpods, which together looks like a bird's foot, and its leaves, which mistakenly appear to grow in threes; hence "tre" toil.
