Signature Spider with Prey
Argiope luzona
15.456, 119.92
Field Notes
Description:
Argiope luzona (Walckenaer, 1842). I have often seen spiders of this kind with a number of prey items on their webs and I recently had the opportunity to read a scientific document written by a group of Filipino academics concerning the relationship between the amount of prey available to Argiope spiders and the size of stabilimenta (web decorations) that they construct (see Notes below). Since this spider had rather a lot of prey items on its web, it got my attention and I took the pictures to try and give an idea of how much these creatures are capable of consuming. Pic #1. Shows the adult female (I think gravid) with three large wrapped prey items on her web. Pic #2. is a zoomed-in crop which shows that the spider was eating prey at the time of my photo. The other photos show three large prey items, wrapped in silk ribbon. The silk used for wrapping prey is the same silk that the spider uses to weave the Stabilimentum. You can see that the biggest prey (which I think was a beetle) was wrapped more than the the other two (possibly grasshoppers) and that was probably necessary because the beetle put up a greater struggle and required more silk to secure it and prevent its escape.
Habitat:
This spider was spotted in the front yard of the rice mill, on its web moored on the stems of a Blushing Philodendron (Philodendron erubescens), growing on a Mango Tree.
Notes:
The Scientific paper available on https://www.scholarsresearchlibrary.com..... was inconclusive, in that it was considered that factors other than prey intake were involved in stabilimentum size.
