Description:

Despite its name, this is not an ant, but a wasp! Female are wingless and resembles hairy ants.
The sting is painful.

Habitat:

Yellowstone national park geyser and hot spring ranges.

I've known them to be called "cow killers". They say the sting is so painful it could kill a cow.
It happened the same to me in an older spotting of a velvet ant.
Thank you Luis. I must admit that I looked forst for true ants, but was really amazed when I finally found it was a wasp.
