Field Notes
Description:
Typified by a whitish stripe down the middle of the back, elongated parotid glands and prominent cranial crests. Ground color ranges from brown to yellow-brown or gray, sometimes with a hint of green. Underside is light, except in southwestern populations, which have dark markings on the chest.
Habitat:
Found in prairie states from Texas north to near the Canadian border, west to Utah, Nevada and Arizona. Isolated populations occur on Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Frequents diverse open habitats, including farm fields, grasslands, desert scrub, wooded areas, and even city yards and gardens. Most common in and near riparian zones.
Notes:
Along the eastern edge of their range they hybridize extensively with Fowler's Toads.
