Field Notes

Description:

What is this Bombylius major doing? At first I thought it was feeding off some sap leaking out of a root, but there wasn't any sap leaking. I then thought it might have been laying eggs, but I read their larvae are parasitoids of solitary bees.

Habitat:

Found in a shady portion of a deciduous forest with lots of shrubby trees and plants. There were many roots along the path, making it more preferable for insects to hide and make habitats.
