Robberfly
Laphria sp
45.0024, -93.1247
Field Notes
Description:
This robust bumblebee-mimicking robber fly is about 15 mm in length.
Habitat:
I photographed this robber fly in a wooded suburban yard, but have also spotted them at wooded edges and along paths in forested areas.
Notes:
By mimicking a bumblebee the robber fly probably accomplishes two things. First, other insects may not be afraid of it, hence it is a very good disguise for hunting. Secondly, bumblebees are dangerous to attack since they can sting, hence are less likely to be attacked by other insects or birds.
