Field Notes

Description:

looking for mushrooms, found this little salamander within a log. Speckled blue! My guess is that it's a Jefferson salamander, Ambystoma jeffersonianum.

Habitat:

within or under logs, mossy places, etc.

Notes:

The first salamander I've ever seen in NYC.

A week after spotting this one, I saw another one, this time in an area where there was one red-backed salamander under almost each log. Made me think this might actually be the "leadback" phase of the red-backed salamander after some reading and research.
