I think this is a Sawfly larva. I have spotted two here in NY that are similar in appearance (I know these are an ocean away). http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/15829522 http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/16159513 I haven't been able to find any matches for them either other than they are Sawfly larva.
Yes, we indeed have much more exciting ones. Sometimes there are also green ones of the same species. The texture seems to be quite conspicuous.
It's not a very exciting caterpillar either Dominik - in fact I wasn't entirely sure that it wasn't a bird dropping until I saw it through the macro lens!
That's a terrible one ;-)... Searching for "brown caterpillar" I got a bulk of brown shoes... Sorry, can't help...
