Field Notes

Description:

European Woodpecker, I have a problem deciding if it's Picus syriacus or another species.

Habitat:

University garden which consists of some big trees.

Notes:

While working I saw this bird out of window struggling in long grass where it had stuck its foot and broken it. There were parasitic flies around it and also found many eggs laid on it so I disinfected its wound, fed it with my R. mordax larva that were collected for my experiments and now is at home with me sitting in a cage. When I first saw it looked like it was going to die, but after force feeding and watering it got a lot better and can eat by itself. Unfortunately it will have only 1 leg but I'm hoping it will learn to live with one leg and be able to fly.

This is a wonderful thing you did for this poor animal. I guess he will learn to live with just one leg. I am sure there must be some rehabilitation center that can give you some clues on how to keep him/her (although it also seems that you are experienced in birds). In any case, thank you for doing this for the poor woodpecker and best wishes for his/her recovery!
Where there is life, there is hope. Animals have an amazing way of making do- adapting to hardships. I agree- his chances are slim, but there is always hope.
It has such beautiful colors!! I have some doubt about it going back in the wild because the woodpeckers I see, seem to hop up and down the tree trunks holding tight with their feet...Great job saving it, FaredinAliyevski, hope it makes it!!
Thanks sis! No, I found this today at work. Has been having long working and rainy days that's why had no chance to go out but tomorrow is off meaning spotting expedition day :).
Oh, this is why you have not uploaded any spotting lately :) You have become a father. Congratulations and best of luck! You are a little hero!
