Field Notes

Description:

The Moreton Bay Pine (aka Hoop Pine) is an evergreen native to coastal rainforests from Cape York to northern New South Wales. It is a slow growing tree which can grow up to 60 metres tall and live up to 450 years.

Most natural stands of Moreton Bay Pines have been cut down, so they are now widely planted for forestry purposes. Its timber is popular for indoor work and joinery.

Habitat:

The species is found in the dry rainforests of New South Wales and Queensland. These trees (pictured) were spotted at the University of Queensland Campus in Brisbane.

Notes:

The Moreton Bay Pine belongs to the same family and genus as the Bunya Pine (Araucaria bidwillii), another Australian native. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/23747002

Great minds think alike, Mark. I was just thinking I must add some pics when these and the Bunyas start to fruit. These are pretty hardy trees, so there's no reason why they shouldn't do well in Melbourne.
You're developing a great collection of the classic trees. It'll be nice to add flowers and cones when they come on line. I must remember to look around here for this one and see how well it does in the cold of Melbourne... probably just smaller.
