Field Notes

Description:

Mean tempered. Brown color. Hard scales compared to other snakes.

Habitat:

Muskrat houses and beaver lodges are good places to find water snakes, which like to hide among the sticks and plant stems. They live near lakes, ponds, marshes, rivers, and canals; just about anywhere there is freshwater.

These Snakes have an anticoagulant saliva which means when they bite it is hard for the blood to clot in that certain area. This doesn't affect humans so much but for smaller mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish this can kill. Especially if they were to bite an artery.
I catch them all the time and I always make sure to keep a hold of the head. I got bit once and that was enough for me.
You were brave to hold it- these fellows are known to have a bit of an attitude problem at times...
