Field Notes

Description:

A dragonfly transitioning to adult stage. (6 pictures + slideshow). After dusk, the dragonfly larvae climbs out of the water to transition into the adult stage of life. Exiting the larval exoskeleton takes about 20 minutes, but the process of wing drying and development takes a few hours. By sunrise all of the dragonflies that transitioned through the night are ready to fly, though many take off while it's still dark.

Habitat:

Edge of freshwater pond on a dock.
