Field Notes

Description:

Very small red mite. 1/2 to 1 mm in size, barely visible to the eye. Rapid, nearly nonstop movement along the leaves of a raspberry plant. It could cover at least 30 body lengths per second without jumping. 8 distinct legs.
From what I can find on Bug Guide. net, it is in the genus Anystis.
However, in the National Wildlife Federation North American Field Guide, it looks exactly like what they label as a chigger.

Habitat:

Found racing around on the end leaves of a raspberry plant on a hot summer day.

Notes:

The photos are with a 180mm macro lens at 1:1 and have been cropped significantly (95%) to obtain this size image.
