Field Notes

Description:

He has a red back and gray belly. The back doesn't have any noticeable dark spots so it is hard to go off of the number of warts in each dark spots for the ID. The belly has a single, large spot that is dark, but is also mottled with smaller, barely visible, lighter spots. The genetics of the toads in East Texas are a big controversy right now, and it is hard to tell which species is which since they have characters of many of the species, but are supposedly not hybrids. I have genetic samples I will use to ID this toad, but until then I believe it to be an American Toad. Any other suggestions are welcome!

Habitat:

Oak forest.
