Field Notes

Description:

Una... ¿Fruta, tal vez? Cosas.

Habitat:

Cerro en el centro de ciudad.

I am at this time investigating the Magnolia tree I bought for my property in Costa Rica, and I have found many species in Central and South America mine seems to be the Magnolia Poasana or Magnolia Sororun. I found species all over South America. I could not find one for Chile. Hope you get an ID.
Hm, maybe the reason that they were not in Santiago is that San Cristobal hill was "made" with vegetation. I mean, before it was a dirty and dry hill, but Santiago people built a giant park within it, full of trees and vegetation!
From http://www.countriesquest.com/south_america/chile/land_and_resources/vegetation_and_animal_life.htm The indigenous plant life of Chile varies according to climatic zone. South of Valdivia are found dense rain forests containing laurel, magnolia, false beech, and various species of conifers.
It does look like a magnolia although I wasn't aware they were in Chile. A magnolia tree was planted in the Santiago stadium for an art installation some years ago: http://eyeteeth.blogspot.com/2010/06/tree-grows-in-chiles-national-soccer.html
Looks like some kind of magnolia seed head http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3008/2773801437_1c02754524_z.jpg%3Fzz%3D1&imgrefurl=http://www.flickr.com/photos/nikname/2773801437/&h=500&w=640&sz=175&tbnid=SkSsKvp6m6WGsM:&tbnh=98&tbnw=126&zoom=1&usg=__P7kPVY_nOEMirp5PI6kPZZaaaRw=&docid=b-0z8mT2Wz1i1M&sa=X&ei=DLnZUf67K4bo8gTa0IHQDQ&ved=0CC8Q9QEwAA&dur=313
