Eastern Fox Squirrel

Hey there! So, I think this is actually an eastern gray squirrel. They were introduced to the Bay Area and although eastern fox squirrels have also been introduced to California, their head is more boxy in shape and their coloration pattern differs slightly. Gray squirrels typically have a white belly while most introduced populations of fox squirrels have an orangish belly. There are some other differences if you compare the tail and face between the two species.

You'll find it is a friendly bunch. I was checking out your spottings... all those years I was butterfly watching(and collecting) why did I never see a pipevine swallowtail?

I lived in the Bay area for a short while - went to Del Mar high in Campbell(that goes back a ways) and moved to Oregon 20 years ago to get away from the So Cal sprawl, smog and traffic. We have very few butterflies, which is sad as that was what got me hooked on nature as a young girl

We're all always working on something! I had only learned about the fox squirrels last year and did some research. I saw a couple in Eugene, Oregon, and saw a spotting from the bay area of one. It piqued my interest in them. I have a special love for out of area animals(regardless of whether man helped or not) and even stared a mission for them in the pacific northwest, as we're getting more and more "tropical" bird sightings up here

Are you sure its not a fox squirrel? I know I've seen western greys in GG park... but never one with the bit of red/brown
