Field Notes

Description:

large, lanky shrub, flowers about 1", note the spider on the bottom right petal.

Habitat:

disturbed forest, urban

Notes:

It was lucky and unexpected to get 2 spots in one with this. I spotted this while hiking on a huge, partially forested hill behind the town of Salento. It's not very wild at all but had enough vegetation and forest cover that I consistently spotted cool things the few times I hiked there.

You're welcome, Dan ... love seeing your photos.
Well ... is a beautiful flower
Thanks Suzanne, it looks like a species of Janusia for sure. Thanks staccyh, not sure if it's a crab spider but I've added a separate spotting for it now. Check it out kel! http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/38673099
Awesome series you've got! Crab spider?
Here's another possibility, genus Janusia ... maybe Janusia anisandra, although I don't see anything with quite that much red-orange blush on the petals.
You're right kel, that looks like the right family. I see a lot of similarities, but instead of editing this spotting, I will create a new one for the spider. I will edit the photo for a closer look and post that. You can try you luck at the spider!
you've seen how is the flower of acerola? It is very similar to this. If you look at the family Malpighiaceae, will find yellow flowers, but nothing like yours. you could change the category of your spotting for category arthropods, and we focus on the spider, seems easier
