Field Notes

Description:

They look like little puffballs on the surface, but dig them up and they have a stalk with a little bit of a bulbous end. The spores are mustard orange. Clusters, some tight clusters, growing in a sandy foot path. Very easy to overlook.

Habitat:

sandy foot path.

Notes:

in Floyd Bennett Field on a footpath from one of the buildings, Brooklyn. Sent these to Scott T. Bates, Ph.D., CIRES Visiting Fellow, Fierer Laboratory, University of Colorado at Boulder and he ID'd them to species. Thanks Scott!
