Description:

This is the caterpillar form of the Monarch butterfly, stage in which they store fat and nutrients in order to survive their pupal stage. This last for 2 weeks, and the caterpillars grow about 5 cm.

This specific caterpillar lives in the butterfly house of the National Museum of Natural History and Science, which in running a conservation project that includes this species, amongst others.

Habitat:

Monarch Butterflies usually live in a wide range of habitats, including prairies, fields, meadows, gardens and urban or suburban locations.

Notes:

I'm not sure what's the plant that it's feeding on! I know they feed on milkweeds but I don't know if this is the case or not.
