Cucurbit Stemborer
Apomecyna histrio
15.4558, 119.92
Field Notes
Habitat:
This Cucurbit Stemborer was spotted, in our vegetable plot, on Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), known as Pipino in the Philippines.
Notes:
This beetle was not difficult to identify as there is a good amount of information available online, including some Project Noah spottings. However, as often happens, I struggled to find confirmation of the presence of this beetle in the Philippines. I finally found a scientific article which states clearly that Apomecyna histrio is the type species of the Genus Apomecyna and that it is distributed in "INDIA; Andaman, West Bengal and Kerala; East ASIA, JAPAN, PHILIPPINES, SUNDA ISLAND, MALAKKA to QUEENSLAND". The article is full of interesting information. There are no photos, but the line drawings are really good and spot-on accurate. I would just mention that I went back to the site, a few times, to check some points and I did not realise that every time I opened it, I was downloading a copy and had to erase them all from my download folder. I don't know if there is something wrong with the link, but I found out that if I just type in the complete name of the article, I can open the site without downloading a copy. So, in case you are interested, here is the name of the article - "Studies on Longicorn Beetles (Coleoptera; Cerambycidae) from India Part 1. On Indian Species of Apomecyna Latreille with a Key to Indian Genera of Tribe Apomecynini". Sorry it's a long title, but if you need the information it is all there.
