Field Notes

Description:

Flat Yellow Leg Millipede

Habitat:

Flat Yellow Leg Millipede lives in the leaf litter of hardwood forests and possibly rotting wood. Temperatures range from 70s at night to high 80s and low 90s during day. They should be kept at around 70% humidity. Adults get 1 3/4- 2 inches (42-51mm) long. They are believed to have a short life cycle of one to two year. They will curl briefly when disturbed, then try to run away. This millipede readily releases it's defense secretions when disturbed. These secretions contain a cyanide compound and a strong odor, but are harmless to the skin. They will not release their secretion if allowed to croll onto your hand.

Notes:

Surprised to see this large millipede on Sunset Drive, Summit, NJ. This is well north of its usual habitat in Carolinas and Virginia. Perhaps brought here by a collector? Or is this siting just another indication of Global Warming?
