Mediterranean spurge
Euphorbia characias
38.9893, 26.4056
Field Notes
Description:
Particular characteristic of the plants is that the flowers form impressively large inflorescences which have the shape of a bowl called 'cyathion', from the ancient Greek word for the cup. The flowers appear at the end of winter and last almost the entire spring.
Habitat:
It grows in slopes and rocky soils, uncultivated fields as well as areas with maki type of vegetation (see pic.6). It prefers sunny places and can withstand seaside areas.
It is a common plant of Greek flora, characteristic of almost all of the eastern Mediterranean and its vegetation.
Notes:
The first photo -detail of the Euphorbia bucket-, looks like a mocking comment: this drought-resistant plant, familiar with long dry periods of the Mediterranean systems, is now bathed in the rain of February!
