Field Notes

Description:

This is one of the Zale Moths in the Family Erebidae. Adults are quite variable with both fore- and hindwings dark brown with shades of yellow, red brown and black, sometimes with white or silver marginal patches. Forewing length is 2 to 2.4 cm.

Habitat:

Range is Texas to Wisconsin east to New England and south to Florida. In the west found from Washington to southern California and east to the Colorado and the Front Range and New Mexico. Habitat is yards, parks, thickets, woodlands, and forests. This one was photographed at a porch light near a southern deciduous forest in the midlands of South Carolina.

Notes:

Hodges#8689. Per BAMONA, this is a new record for this species in Edgefield County, SC.
