Field Notes

Description:

Small predatory songbird, some 20cm in length. Brownish above, whitish below, and like most other shrikes, it has a distinctive black "bandit-mask". (this black mask may become paler and more discreet...).

Habitat:

Common in Asia, and found mainly in open scrub habitats, where it perches on the tops of thorny bushes in search of prey - here, just outside the village, and close to open paddy fields and other gardens.

Notes:

Another gem in the collection of birds from my favorite family - Laniidae, butcher birds.
