Little Sweet Betsy
Trillium cuneatum
34.16, -84.74
Field Notes
Description:
Looking at this photo of a cluster of plants inside the colony I observed, as well as other sightings made on this day (in in 2013) you can see that this is a somewhat variable species. The "leaves" can be pointier or rounder, have a strong central stripe occurring in the color pattern, or be more generally mottled. While Little Sweet Betsy is the most common of the sessile trilliums in this area, this variety makes identifying some of the less common species which do occur in this area very difficult!
Habitat:
Native USA (AL, GA, IL, KY, MD, MS, NC, PA, SC, TN, VA) rich, mostly upland woods, especially on limestone soils; also old fields, ditches, or other disturbed sites
Notes:
Spotted growing along road to Cooper's Furnace Day Use Area at Allatoona Dam Cartersville, GA
