Field Notes

Description:

Crane fly of some kind on a glass door, photos taken from both sides. Family Tipulidae. Nothing exotic, but that's OK. I'm into knowing the creatures that share my world, so I'm reading up on crane flies tonight. This one is probably very common. Anyone recognize it?

Yikes, DrNamgyalT.Sherpa, your giant looks like something from a Hollywood movie set! Nice detail, thanks for sharing it.
DrNamgyalT.Sherpa, I would love to see your giant, send me a link! I've known this insect all my life, but only now am I trying to know its name and learn something about it ... since I was a child, I've called this insect a "mosquito hawk." I'm a plant person trying to expand my horizons. And loving it!
Hi, suzmonk! You'll be surpised that no one seem to like this beatiful dangling creature. Is it due to lack of colour? To me it seems so. Many of the favoured posts on pn are the micro shots of its head. I like your attempt of showing the ventral view. Next time you can try with the flash. Pl also refer my post of a similar giant: 150mm across legs!
