Field Notes

Description:

7 baby box turtles.
let 5 of them go back.
One of the two that we kept died. That was two weeks ago.

Habitat:

about four inches deep into loose soil. Near base of a tulip-poplar tree. about 3 feet from grass.

Notes:

newly hatched
eggs broken open
turtles were starting to crawl out
egg color-white
egg texture-creamy
eggs were thin. They were also rubbery.

Species ID Suggestions

You should never remove any species from the wild. As mentioned it is 100% illegal in MD to take turtles with a carapace size of 4 inches or less. Now that you have already taken him, and he is not going to be hibernating put a heat lamp above where you keep him and feed him turtle food from a pet store.
I's not really a good idea to remove animals from the wild, and frequently illegal to boot. Many turtle/tortoise species hibernate in the winter, and are buried by well-meaning people who assume they have died.
They are Eastern Box Turtles. How do I take care of the one that I still have this winter? It is not moving around as much now. Why is this?
