Also please remember to change the category from plants to arthropods :-) Actually the gall exists because of both - the cynipid wasp uses chemistry to force the tree to grow differently forming a home for the wasp - great trick eh ?!
Possibly a gall of Biorhiza pallida on Quercus. This gall is created by a small Cynipid wasp
Very interesting ! but i don't think it's a pomegranate, going by the cup-like structures-like the cupule of an acorn. Would really love to see other shots of the plant/bush, if you have any Stephen. Wondering if it's a stem gall ? Do you know what kind of plant it was on?? Extra information always helps. Thanks.
