Description:
Burnt orange to pale yellow mushroom with flat to depressed (center) cap. Gills cream and tightly spaced while slightly decurrent. Exuding VERY STICKY and VERY PUTRID white latex. Stem was fragile; it quickly went to mush in my hands and was partially hollowed (otherwise dark brown to orange flesh inside).
Habitat:
Leaf litter and pine straw at the base of a ridge in a dense mixed hardwood forest. Surrounded by ferns and lots of organic matter.
Notes:
This was probably the worst smelling mushroom I have encountered in my adventures yet. I regretted not bringing something to wash off after handling this one! It smelled like animal musk or an expressed anal gland of a dog (if any of you own dogs, you will know it is an awful scent). It took a lot of washing to get this sticky latex off of my hands.
