Field Notes

Description:

Checkered Garter Snake - about 16" long. Photos pretty much speak for themselves.

Habitat:

Shaded lawn on edge of Ashe Juniper (Juniperus ashei) woodland. Shallow rocky limestone soil near major normal fault, just East of Balcones Escarpment. Woodlands themselves are predominantly Ashe Juniper with presence of limestone boulders and outcrops.

Well spotted and great photos of this beautiful fellow. We have various dwarf snake species here which are about the same size and very docile. Snakes are awesome creatures! :-)
Only at Petsmart. To be fair this is the first garter snake I've seen in the wild, although I'm always looking.
Nice! Do you ever see an orange checkered pattern on garters?
