Field Notes

Description:

A large owl (25" tall, 4'7" wing span), varying in color from nearly white (in Arctic areas) to dark brown and gray. Mottled and streaked below, setting off the white throat; prominent, widely spaced ear tufts; large yellow eyes.

Habitat:

Found throughout North America, these adaptive birds live most any place, from forests to open country, deserts to swamps, and even in city parks.

Notes:

Voice

Series of low, sonorous, far-carrying hoots, hoo, hoo-hoo, hoo, hoo, with second and third notes shorter than the others.
