Field Notes

Description:

The tail has so many bands. Head is partial white. Large bird

Habitat:

California Delta near Jones Tract. Alfalfa just cut and the birds were feasting on the "roadkills" from the tractor.

Notes:

These pix may not be the same bird. There were more than I could count hawks(some swainsons some Red tails) sitting on this ~100 acres of fresh cut Alfalfa

Swainson's hawk is a state-listed species in California. The majority of the population migrates to South America in winter, but a few spend the winter in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta area.
