Field Notes

Description:

These are the same parents and chicks as my last killdeer spotting with the nest: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/31094033. Now the eggs have hatched. There were 3 eggs. Two of the chicks were running all around the parking lot. One, was still sitting in the nest not moving. In the first picture, you can see one of the parents and one of the chicks. The parents are a lot more protective of the babies now, and would both do the displays and at one point, one flew in front of me blocking me from one of the chicks.

A day or two after I took these, my mom went back without me and checked on them. All the chicks, including the one in the nest, were gone, and the parents too.

Habitat:

A parking lot

I know! They are shorebirds, but they don't always live near water.
Thank you! I still wish I could've gotten closer, but both the chicks and the parents were pretty freaked out. I'm glad I got to see the chicks too lol :D
Good work! I'm glad you got to see the chicks. :-)
Thank you :). I have always been fascinated with this species and this is the second nest that I've watched, but I've seen countless adults around town.
I know! The babies were so adorable, especially when they stood straight up, because their legs looked too long for their bodies.
