Dear Kareni, at first I thought it would be some kind of Jabu, an animal common around Asia, but I now think otherwise. From my intaractions with Despina, I think it might be a subspecie of the African Civet.
Dear Despina, I quite agree with you, as I have found that there are several subspecies of the African Civet. This might just be one of them. Otherwise am not sure what else it might be.
umohaffia, please can you provide a scientific name for this species as Jabu appears to be a local name and does not come up on any internet searches.
Dear @Umohaffia, I read in wiki that there's 7 subspecies of African civet, so it could belong in one of these subspecies...Otherwise I don't think it fits in any other Viverridae family member...
Dear Despina, Also note these: The black bands surrounding the African civet’s eyes closely resemble those of the raccoon. Other distinguishing features of the African civet are its disproportionately large hindquarters and its erectile dorsal crest. The hind and front quarters of the one I shared are relatively normal. If its an African Civet, then it must be of another kind, as it closely resemble a dog, hyena, or Jabu and not a raccoon, like most Civets.
Dear Despina, notice the absence of the white ring around the snout and the absence of the long furs along the spine of the one I posted. Also notice the difference in tail form,(Length and size). Even with the close resemblance, I doubt if its the African Civet
Nice that you shared it but too bad it was dead because someone hunted it.
Despina, its being hunted for meat. its eaten as exotic (Bush meat) meat in parts of southern Nigeria. So sad.
Yes Kyleighphelps, its a beautiful animal. So so sad.
