Five-lined Skink

Plestiodon fasciatus

Comments (1)

The only way to tell the broadhead skink and five-lined skink apart is by counting the number of upper labial scales. These are the scales on the upper link from the nose to the eye. Five-lined skinks have 4, broadhead skinks have 5. Yours has 4, making it a five-lined skink. Additionally, I've been catching skinks in east Texas for quite some time now and of the hundreds I've caught, only one has been a broadhead skink. They are certainly not very common in Texas like they are in the eastern US
