Description:
About 2 inches long, 1.5 " across. Dark- colored, producing a reddish brown sheen from the Elytra in sunlight. You can clearly see the three horns on the pronotum.
Habitat:
A student brought this beetle to me and said it was found upside down on the sidewalk, probably in pursuit of some dead wood to eat. It was released to the school courtyard, hopefully with a good supply of mulch for it to munch on.
Notes:
These large scarab beetles prefer a good source of dead wood and have more protein than either chicken or beef. These are popular pets on Asian cultures and are sometimes used in gambling fights or engineering studies. Source: http://En.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynastinae
