Field Notes

Description:

A blueberry species. Leaves are a nice bright green, whitish underneath. Leaves about a maximum of 1.5 inches, but varies greatly- as can be seen in my pic. It can get to be a fairly large bush.

Berries are edible, but frequently aren't very tasty. I ate one that wasn't quite ripe yet, and it did have a bit of a tartness to it. I was told that once they are ripe, they have a hint of "mealy apple" to them, and they weren't really worth the bother of picking. Leave them for the jays and mockingbirds.

Habitat:

This specimen was seen along a trail at Lyonia Preserve, in a gorgeous Rosemary/Oak Scrub.
