Field Notes

Description:

This white water bird has a large orange beak and beady yellow eyes. Its long neck is folded so it appears that the head is on its shoulders. They typically stand on one leg. The white plumage is the non breeding winter coat and they develop colored plumage in the breeding season.

Habitat:

Found by a suburban pond as a solitary individual, they are often seen in flocks.

Notes:

The cattle egret is from the heron family. They are commonly seen around cattle and welcomed by farmers as they are an effective predator of ecto-parasites.
