Field Notes

Description:

Shelf or bracket shaped fungi, 6-12 inches in width in interconnected rows found on living trees.

Habitat:

In coastal temperate rains forests of southern Alaska. The mushroom grows on dead wood on fallen or trees with damaged parts.

Jared, The Ganoderma sp. seems to be consistent with spotting. Ganoderma are not uncommon in southern Alaska; in fact there is a Ganoderma Cafe in Ketchikan. Also, the University of Guelph in Ontario displays a Giant Ganoderma from souther Alaska. The Gandoderma appears to be 3-4 feet wide.

Reminds me of Ganoderma tsugae. I know they grow on hemlock but that looks like a type of pine tree.
