Field Notes

Description:

The Indian Fritillary (Argynnis hyperbius) is butterfly of the Nymphalid or brush-footed butterfly family.

Habitat:

Western Himalayas.

Notes:

This butterfly was rescued from behind the window. I have rescued many moths and butterflies and when I am about to make them go away they stay on my hand and feed on the sweat on my fingers. Of course they need minerals from anywhere they can get them. This one stayed as long as 15-20 mins and went away only when my mother came to talk to me. I guess that scared it.

Haha. Thank you Nuwan. You have been correcting many of my butterfly IDs lately. :) Those two looked so similar! I could see the under-wing and the fore-wing margins were different but I went on to Id it all wrong. I am not going to Id another butterfly when I am confused. I will wait for your suggestion.

Oh yes! I have experienced it more than 5 times. Photographed just once. I guess you wrote the comment when I was updating the notes. :) And trust me dutta you can even feel their proboscis moving on hand. :)

Did you know that butterflies land on you to suck up your sweat and 'nutrients', except you can barely feel their proboscis... basically they land on you to eat you. Butterflies are carnivores! Great picture.
