Field Notes

Description:

A species of venomous rear-fanged snake in the family Atractaspididae. It Grows to an average length of 40 cm and a maximum of 54 cm in length.

Habitat:

Savanna/woodland (Observed at the Environmental Education Centre, Mlawula Nature Reserve)

Notes:

Dorsally it is olive or pale brown, with each scale edged with blackish, giving the appearance of dark netting, to which the common name, "reticulated", refers. Same snake http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/270636005
Eats centipedes and scorpions. Oviparous (egg-laying), lays between 2 and 4 eggs in summer. Although venomous is not thought to be dangerous to man.
