Hirundo rustica
46.9809, -123.889
Field Notes
Description:
Small bird, when mature is dark blue on top with a creamy buff breast, rusty brown throat and forehead. Forked V-shaped tail.
Immature is charcoal black to blue on top with a rusty brown, slight creamy buff breast, and brown to rust colored throat and forehead.
Habitat:
Fence and field near marsh and bay.
Notes:
I enjoy watching the juvenile Barn Swallow's. They get very excited during their feeding time. When there is a row of juveniles sitting on the fence being fed the mature Swallow flies and brings an insect catch to each juvenile, one at a time. The other's become near frantic as they cry out hoping to get the mature Swallow's attention. The mature Swallow seems to know who will be fed next no matter how loud or impatient the other waiting juveniles get.
