Field Notes

Description:

Juvenile grizzly bear, < 2m long on all fours, probably > 2m tall standing on its hind legs.

Habitat:

Sub-arctic montane forest.

Notes:

Spotted along the road to Moraine Lake in Banff National Park. When first spotted, there were two of these young bears on the south side of the road. This one crossed to the north side to browse at the bottom of the road cut. Its companion disappeared, unphotographed, into brush on the south side. When I got out of my vehicle to take a picture of the bear still in view, it was apparently startled, as it suddenly snorted and bolted up the slope of the road cut. Halfway up, it turned, and I got the first picture. It then ascended the rest of the way and began browsing along the top edge of the cut, during which process the other three pictures were obtained.
