Field Notes

Description:

About an inch long (+/- 2.5 cm). Obviously Diptera, and most likely a member of the Family Asilidae or a relation thereof. (According to a friend)

Update: Cophinopoda oldroydi or C. chinensis. The only difference is the shape of the male genitalia. Thanks goes to beaker98 for the point in the right direction! =}

Habitat:

Low-lying foliage, gardens.

Good job on the ID. I think you've got it. I would probably make it "Cophinopoda sp." for the scientific name though. As you say a microscope is required for further accuracy.
I got it narrowed down as far as I could and updated it. Cheers, beaker98!
Thanks, guys. I'll check into the Robber Fly possibility. :-)
Stunning photos Audie. Thanks for sharing this.
This appears to be a species of Robber Fly (Asilidae). Amazing photos!
