Field Notes

Description:

Average adult size reaching 6 to 10 inches, although they can grow larger, and some reach maturity before this size. Coloration can be bronze, silver, green, and everywhere in-between, with an orange belly, blue highlight on the gill, and a dark tag on the gill.

Habitat:

Typically found in dense populations in ponds and lakes, they are also found in rivers but their niche is filled in more with fishes better adapted for that habitat (such as rock bass). Virtually any structure is accepted by this fish, although weed and wood cover is most commonly associated with this fish.

Notes:

This fish was safely released (second photo) immediately after documentation, and swam away healthy.
